William Haymand was born in Scotland, and joined the Royal North Carolina Regiment in 1779 to fight the colonist rebels. He fought with the British until Cornwallis was defeated by George Washington at the Battle of Yorktown. At the end of the war his Regiment was disbanded, and he and 40 other men migrated to Nova Scotia where he settled and married.
